Encaustics
Encaustic means "to burn in" from the Greek word enkaustikos. It's ancient origin dates back to Trojen ship building times when the ships were sealed with pigmented beeswax to make them watertight. Around 100-300 AD the Egyptians started using the medium for mummy portraits. The medium most commonly consists of bees wax, powdered pigment and dakar resin. It iis worked warm and applied to a prepared surface, usually wood, with each layer being burned into the previous layer with a butane torch, heat gun or other heat source..
